Transforming Research
The Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS) created a portfolio of world-class tools and services designed to help Australian researchers.
The original ARCS Development Program, funded through a grant from the Australian Commonwealth Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science, and Research, concluded on 30 June 2011.
The ARCS Services are now provided by a collective of ARCS Operators, and include Data Fabric Services, Grid/Cloud Services, and Video Collaboration Services. All are free, flexible, enhance collaboration, and help to shape the next generation of eResearch.
ARCS Data Fabric Services
ARCS Data Services enable researchers to conveniently and effectively control their data online. Maintaining, accessing and distributing data is a significant challenge. ARCS Data Services address the fundamental requirements surrounding data: storage, sharing and transport.
ARCS Grid/Cloud Services
ARCS Grid/Cloud Services enable users to access the High Performance Computing Grid of Systems through an easy to use interface, to provide flexible, reliable and cost effective services.
ARCS Video Collaboration Services
ARCS Video Collaboration Services enable people in different locations to reduce costly and time-consuming travel while sharing information face to face. Whether it’s individuals on personal computers or groups in large rooms, ARCS Video Collaboration Services provide a reliable videoconferencing solution.
Each of the ARCS eResearch services is:
- An interoperable standardised solution for easy installation and use;
- Complementary to, not replacing, existing technology; they are not “rip and replace”;
- Simple and easy-to-use solutions for non-technical people;
- Flexible and support a variety of operating systems and environments; and
- Supported through a Central Helpdesk.
The “ARCS Operators”, all trusted eResearch support organisations, comprise
- eResearch South Australia (eRSA)
- Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF)
- INTERSECT
- iVEC
- Tasmanian Partnership for Advanced Computing (TPAC), and
- Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC).
