GridVO

Virtual Organisations are the 'glue' that holds various research teams or groups together. ARCS uses a tool called VOMRS to manage its virtual organisations. The key characterstics include -

  • Project Leaders have control of their virtual organisation. Typically senior researchers or nominees of same, they have the authority and ability to invite others to joining the VO, to restrict VO members

privileges, or even to exclude an existing member.

  • Virtual Organisations will typically be characterised as having some ownership of some resource. Being a member of the VO will allow some access to that resource, at the will of the Project Leader.
  • VOMRS uses a web interface to permit the Project Leader to exercise the necessary control.
  • Proxies are the means by which the VOMRS rule set is enforced.
  • ARCS supported tools like Grix allow end users to easily apply for membership to VOs
  • Creation of ARCS Virtual Organisation is quite easy. Please send an email to the ARCS help line, help@arcs.org.au
  • Australian University researchers are automatically put into a (fairly limited) demonstration VO when their certificate is first created. This allows easy activities as detailed in The Grid Start Up Pages.

How does it work ?

This is probably more technical than most end users need.
